What does it mean to be B Corp

What is a B Corp?

A B Corp is an organisation that has been certified to meet high standards of social and environmental impact. B stands for Benefit for all and the B Corp movement’s mission is to change our economic system to positively impact all stakeholders — workers, communities, customers, and our planet.

Why did Pure Table Top decide to become a B Corp certified business?

We had four main reasons:
  1. Firstly, it is the best framework for measuring and reporting our social and environmental impact in a way that can be more easily understood by employees and other stakeholders than traditional corporate reporting.
  2. Secondly, it holds us legally accountable to report on this measured impact, providing us with extra incentive to always improve our performance.
  3. Thirdly, the certification provides us and our customers with extra reassurance that we are doing things to the best of our ability. It’s a framework that allows us to certify beyond product and service levels.
  4. And finally, we have been working on our transformation for a couple of years now. Joining the B Corp community gives us greater access to a network of people that can help us to accelerate our journey towards becoming a regenerative business and giving back more than we take.
When did you start your B Corp journey?

We started our journey around two years ago as we were looking for frameworks to help us measure and improve our sustainability performance. We came across the B Impact Assessment (BIA) without really knowing its significance. As we worked through it we began to learn more about its reputation and how to apply the assessment to Pure Table Top. We were introduced to some consultants (Future Shift) who really helped us to understand the process and the biggest impact areas.

What job roles did your B Corp team comprise of? Who was part of your internal B-Corp team?

The team was led by our Sustainability Officer, and included our Founder and Director, Sourcing Manager, Head of People and Culture, Director of Operations, Technical Manager, Product Technologist.

What were the biggest changes you saw internally through your B Corp journey?

I think that the biggest change was in our mindset/approach towards sustainable transformations throughout our business. It highlighted a need to go above and beyond product and service level certifications and really allowed us to see the bigger picture and what the B Corp structure can do to strengthen our company mission and values.

How are Pure’s employees benefitting from the certification so far?

So far, we have implemented several key initiatives which came to light when going through the ‘Workers’ section of the assessment. For example, we are now an accredited Real Living Wage employer, we have implemented several health and wellbeing resources for both employees and families, we are giving our employees paid volunteering days and greater access to both career and individual development. We’re hoping that they’ll be able to grow their social and professional networks too as they get involved in the B Corp community.
